He delighted in the use of irony and extravagance and the horror tale ‘Metzengerstein’, the first story he had published, was intended as a burlesque. But Poe wrote not only ‘horror’, but satire, humour and hoaxes. Recurring themes include considerations of death, the process of decomposition, the possibility of reanimation, and fear of premature burial. Poe’s best-known work is decidedly Gothic. A major figure in American literature, Poe was one of the country’s earliest and leading practitioners of the short story, and is credited as the father of detective fiction, as well as a major influence on science fiction. Edgar Allan Poe is remembered for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of ‘mystery and imagination’, many of which are distinguished by a relish for the macabre.
